Big Changes This Week!

Wow!  We are seeing some big changes in our boy this week!  It's like the light switch has been turned on in his intestines and they are finally figuring out that food is a good thing.  At his appointment on the 28th, the dietician really stressed finding a milk substitute that works for him (for added fat & calories).  She suggested Hemp milk.  I ran it by the Parents of FructMal Kids group and they recommended the Pacific brand.  I ran to Fred Meyer to get some, but they were sold out so I grabbed some Tempt Unsweetened Vanilla hemp milk to see what he thought of the taste.  The first sip gave him the shivers and he said it would be okay in cereal, but he didn't really like it.

The next day I had to run to Freddy's again for something else and saw that they had received a shipment of Pacific - perfect!  Buddy gave it a try and said it was really good.  He has been drinking about 8-12oz, four times a day!

On Wednesday, another FructMal Mama (a friend I met online 2 years ago - she has an FM girl and a Celiac boy as well) asked if I had heard of peanut butter powder called PB2.  I had not!  She gave me the link, then I called up my favorite store - Fred Meyer - and asked if they carried it.  By golly, they did!  So off to Freddy's I went.  Buddy went with and asked if he could try both flavors - peanut butter & peanut butter/chocolate.  As soon as we got home he was digging through the bag for his PB2.  He mixed about a tablespoon in 8oz of hemp milk and said it was delicious!  He has been drinking it 3-4 times a day for the past couple of days...but he has increased the quantity to about 12oz of milk and 2 tablespoons of powder.  Hurray for more calories & protein!

About a month ago we changed our cooking oil over to a non-GMO - Napa Valley Naturals, Expeller Pressed Organic Canola.  We use a lot of oil so I thought this would be a healthier option for us.  It has a different flavor than your traditional, store bought canola oil.  The kids say it tastes like cucumber.  It does kind of...it's a fresh, clean taste.  It took the tastebuds a few days to adjust to it.

And a week ago we decided to add Vit D3 to Buddy's supplements because he isn't able to eat dairy.  He's taking Vitamin D3 1,000 IU Sunny Gummies by Rainbow Light every-other day.

An exciting thing we have recently discovered is Buddy is tolerating more sugar!  I picked up some Udi's Snickerdoodle cookies for New Year's Eve.  Buddy was having a couple friends over to stay the night and I thought they'd like to have a sweet treat.  I told him he could have one cookie and to wait and see how he does before we try more the next day (they have butter & lots of sugar).  Well, he enjoyed it so much he couldn't resist sneaking 2 more!  They have 16g of sugar EACH!  I was expecting a terrible nights sleep, and some big mood swings the following day, but guess what?  No symptoms!  None whatsoever!

The next day, New Year's Day, he wanted to try some of my clementine orange.  I gave him 4 slices.  No reaction!  The next day he had half an orange.  No reaction!  He has enjoyed a snickerdoodle each day since...and this morning, a cluster of red grapes.  So far so good!  This is really amazing!!  I should also mention he's been off of his reflux meds for 4 or 5 days and hasn't had any complaints.  He has tons of energy and doesn't have red circles under his eyes.  We'll keep testing his fructose limit to see where his threshold is...it's definitely increasing!  I put in a call to his GI doc to see if he still wants to do the scope this week.  We'll see what he says!

Keep those prayers coming - they are being answered!!

My FructMal Girl...and Celiac Boy?

Well, this is all starting to starting to sink in... We saw Dr. L on the 3rd of June for a follow-up with Tootsie and to have Buddy seen for his increasing discomfort and array of symptoms.  These are the symptoms he presented with: Bloating Constipation Reflux Sharp abdominal pain Lactose intolerance  Large volume stools...large diameter Leg bruising Joint Pain Muscle Pain Feeling like he was going to vomit at bedtime Irritability/moodiness...Buddy said he felt like he had a bad temper. Dr. L listened carefully to everything we said and decided to start with an endoscopy.  I could see the wheels turning as he was listening to us and felt like he was leaning toward celiac disease, but couldn't believe our boy could have it.  Just 5 days later, on June 13th, Buddy had the scope done and while he was under they did blood work as well.  He was very nervous about the whole thing, but put on a brave face and did very well!  After it was all done he said, "That was

Hydrogen Breath Test Instructions (for FM & SIBO)

A breath hydrogen test provides information about your child's ability to digest certain sugars such as milk sugar (lactose) or fruit sugar (fructose).  This will help determine if your child is intolerant to these sugars.  The test is also used for detecting abnormal growth of bacteria within the small intestine.  Bacterial overgrowth can cause symptoms such as nausea, diarrhea, bloating, gas, and abdominal cramps. The breath hydrogen test is simple, painless and non-invasive.  Please observe the following pretest guidlines to assure accurate results. Preparation For The Test 2 weeks prior to the test: No oral antibiotics (skin creams, eye and ear drops are OK) No probiotic supplements.  Yogurt is OK until the day before the test. **If your child is placed on antibiotics prior to the test, please reschedule. 1 week prior to the test: No stimulant laxatives, antidiarrheals or fiber supplements May continue Miralax up until the day before the test The day before the test: your
