One Month Into Our Gluten-Free Life

Well, it has been a month since our boy's celiac diagnosis.  It hasn't been smooth sailing.  I guess I thought by adhering to a strict gluten-free diet he'd feel better immediately.  That hasn't been the case.  Reflux has been one of his symptoms all along and at the 2 week point he was miserable.  He was having reflux a couple times a day - usually 30 minutes or so after a meal and he was taking Pepto Bismol at bedtime a few nights a week.  His appetite decreased and he was having pain in the middle of his tummy and under his ribs, despite being gluten-free, lactose-free, and low fructose.  I called his GI doc (Dr. L) to see what to do.  He recommended trying a Miralax cleanse since his stools were firm and large.  He said to call back if that didn't eleviate his symptoms.  It seemed to work for about 3 days, then Buddy was back where he started with pain and reflux.

I called Dr. L back and he suggested a round of metronidazole (generic for Flagyl) to treat suspected Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth.  We thought this was a great idea given little Tootsie's history of SIBO.  Buddy finishes up his prescription tomorrow.  Fingers crossed, but I think it's working!  He has had several days of no pain and just a few reflux complaints.  He has been hungry today and has had a lot of energy.  I really hope he's on the road to recovery - and healed villi!  He is down 3 pounds so I'm hoping for weight gain soon as well.

We stopped by Super Supplements today.  Buddy's RD recommended extra vitamin D, calcium & iron.    He will be taking the following supplements daily:
  • Gummy Power Sours Multivitamin & Minerals
  • Nordic Naturals Omega 3 gummies
  • Rhino Calciums with Vitamins D & K
  • Digest Gold digestive enzymes (to take with meals)
I couldn't find an appropriate iron supplement so I will consult with the dietician tomorrow for recommendations.  We are limited on chewable/gummy options with his newly acquired fructose malabsorption.  They all seem to have fruit juice, honey, sorbitol, inulin or other FM no no's.

A study published in Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology gave these Results: At diagnosis, celiac patients had a significantly higher reflux symptom mean score than healthy controls (P < .001). At baseline, 30.1% of CD patients had moderate to severe GERD (score >3) compared with 5.7% of controls (P < .01). Moderate to severe symptoms were significantly associated with the classical clinical presentation of CD (35.0%) compared with atypical/silent cases (15.2%; P < .03). A rapid improvement was evidenced at 3 months after initial treatment with a Gluten Free Diet (P < .0001) with reflux scores comparable to healthy controls from this time point onward.

What can she eat?

We get this question a lot.  Here is a list of foods that Tootsie can eat... BREAD Udi's white sandwich bread  (Haggen, Fred Meyer) Udi's Multi Grain (Costco) Corn tortillas (She likes the soft ones. We use them for quesadillas, topped with sour cream). Hydrogen Breath Test Instructions (for FM & SIBO)

A breath hydrogen test provides information about your child's ability to digest certain sugars such as milk sugar (lactose) or fruit sugar (fructose).  This will help determine if your child is intolerant to these sugars.  The test is also used for detecting abnormal growth of bacteria within the small intestine.  Bacterial overgrowth can cause symptoms such as nausea, diarrhea, bloating, gas, and abdominal cramps.
