Well, just when I started to get excited... Here we are again with tummy pain and no appetite. Ugh...
Buddy's biggest complaint is he feels like his food is getting stuck in his throat or something is in his throat that he can't swallow. He doesn't think it's reflux...he thinks things are having a hard time going down. There have been several cases where he's eating something and runs for a glass of water to try and wash it down...and he's crying and in a panic because it feels like it's stuck. Dr. L prescribed Prilosec yesterday and ordered a swallow study. He said he checked for eosinophilic esophagitis during the endoscopy and it was negative. We'll see what the swallow study shows....
--July 29, 2012-- Buddy's new complaint is his tongue feels like a sponge and it feels like food is getting stuck in it. I had him stick his tongue out last night and it had a "hairy" appearance. I looked up "thrush" and "thrush in throat" on MedScape and it said candidiasis in the throat can cause the feeling of something getting caught in your throat or can cause a difficulty swallowing. I decided to take him to the walk-in clinic this morning to have it looked at. The doctor looked up the side effects of metronidazole (the medication he was talking for SIBO) and one of the side effect was "hairy tongue" caused by candidiasis. He prescribed clotrimazole oral troches to suck on 5 times a day for 10 days. What if this whole swallowing issue was caused by yeast?! We'll see what the GI doctor has to say about the swallow study tomorrow...or Tuesday...
--July 31, 2012-- Spoke with the GI nurse this morning and she said Buddy's esophagram was normal...everything was working as it should in the swallowing department. It did detect some reflux though. He is starting to feel better with the yeast medication so hopefully with the combination of reflux and yeast meds he'll be back to eating normally soon! He just tried a piece of gluten-free toast with coconut spread and he said it went down without a problem. He has been avoiding bread and foods of that texture for a week. It's nice to see him eat it without choking!
This photo is gross, but this is what his "hairy" tongue looks like...

--August 1, 2012-- We aren't seeing much change in Buddy's tongue with the clotrimazole so doctor called in Nystatin to swish and swallow 4x a day for 10 days. No throat or swallowing complaints so far today!
Hi, I just came upon your blog while searching on the internet about fructose malabsorption and intolerance. I had the same symptoms as your son a few years ago and was diagnosed with gastroparesis - paralysis of the stomach muscles. My doctor ordered a stomach emptying test...just wanted to suggest it to you in case this hasn't been tried. It's a noninvasive test; very easy to do, just time-consuming. I too felt like I couldn't eat & couldn't swallow but a few bites at the most. And yes, it felt like it was getting stuck in my throat. The gastroparesis led to SIBO. I had already gone gluten free when they tested me for celiac's (negative result). My understanding is that gastroparesis will come and go throughout my life; currently I am in regression. Good luck!!
ReplyDeleteoops - that should be "in remission" not regression lol :)
ReplyDeleteThank you for the info, Jennifer! We are waiting for results of the swallow study. We should hear something on Monday or Tuesday. If nothing shows I'll ask about gastroparesis.
