Well, we had a little bump in our FructMal journey. On January 21st and 22nd we tried some Light Karo Corn Syrup on Tootsie's pancakes...it said No HFCS on the label so I thought it was safe. Tootsie ended up having diarrhea on the 23rd (it smelled very strongly of sweet fructose), then she didn't have another BM for 8 days. Dr. L (GI) ordered a tummy x-ray, which showed her intestines were full to her ribs with stool. He prescribed a cleanse with Magnesium Citrate. We mixed 6oz. with equal parts Diet Sierra Mist and she started having BM's within 2 hours. She had a total of 5 watery stools that day, which burned her little bottom but she was in great spirits all day. I'm sure the relief from the pressure felt wonderful.
During the week of constipation she had about 4 nights of night terrors and had some hyperactivity/irritability during the day. The night terrors stopped the night of the cleanse, but the hyperactivity continued for a couple more days. We are now on our 4th day following the cleanse and she is acting and feeling great.
We have taken a few items out of her diet for now - brown rice syrup (udi's pizza crust, udi's bagels) and we are limiting corn products. She is taking a maintenance dose of Miralax each day to keep her stools soft. Dr. L wants her having a BM daily, and similar to mashed potatoes in consistency.
It still amazing me how an unhappy gut can cause issues with hyperactivity/irritability and night terrors!
