We met with Miss J (dietician) today. We discussed the low FODMAP diet (Fermentable Oligo-, Di- and Mono-Saccharides and Polyols) and how to introduce foods in a systematic way so we can observe symptoms. We know that Tootsie can tolerate lactose - she tested negative to a lactose breath test and has no physical symptoms to dairy (thank goodness!). We know she is very sensitive to fructose, but what we need to find out is if she can tolerate fructans (wheat, garlic, onions, zucchini, asparagus, artichoke, ect) and galactans (canned beans, green beans, soy, tofu, cabbage, etc). Over the next month we will be keeping a log of what she eats and also keeping track of any GI or mood changes. The first week will be a usual week, the 2nd & 3rd weeks will be an elimination diet - which is strictly FODMAP free, and the 4th week will be introducing fructans back in...then galactans.
Miss J wants her to cut out all sorbitol and all other sugar alcohols (polyols) from her diet. They interfere with fructose absorption and can cause mood changes in malabsorbers. That means Toots will have to give up her 3-stick (or more)-a-day habit of sugarless chewing gum! But, Miss J did say that it was okay to have gum sweetened with sugar. We just have to keep her teeth very clean so she doesn't get decay. Toots has also been taking Flinstone multivitamins/minerals and the first ingredient is sorbitol (not good). We changed her over to Trader Joe's Children's Chewables today. They are sweetened with sucrose & dextrose. Miss J is doing some research to see if she can find a suitable multivitamin/mineral supplement which also contains iron.
I have been concerned with the fact that she doesn't eat meat, but Miss J said not to worry about it for now. She is getting enough protein in eggs, cheese, and nuts. We started the Intestinal Repair Complex today...we mixed it in some yogurt (wallaby vanilla) and she gobbled it right down.
Stay tuned as our journey continues...
